Dev Log # 11


This week has mostly been playtesting and planning. With a new public version out I wanted to check for any game breaking bugs that would need a hotfix. So far everything is working ok for me but there have been some reports of crashes. Oh yeah, I have a Discord server now! It's still pretty empty but I'll be filling it out more over the next few weeks!

Playtesting has helped me spot a few minor bugs but so far things look pretty stable so the public hotfix will probably be out next week on Itch.

One thing that's still worrying me is that new versions break old saves. RenPy is not the best engine for a procedural game like Dorm Roach, it's much too linear, but there's no way I'm starting over now. I have an idea that may fix the save mismatch problem but it will only work for future builds. Next week's build will be the last one without safety features so I'd recommend starting a new game again when that's out.

Once that hotfix build is done I can actually start work on the UI overhaul! Lots of important information is invisible to the player right now so stage one will be adding a graphical UI overlay to show things like the time of day. That will also mean I finally get to replace the ugly player stats panel that's been growing in the bottom left of the screen.

No new art again, to be honest I forgot that one of my goals was drawing new art for these devlogs. Maybe next time...
